Sophia Hotung is a Eurasian writer and illustrator from Hong Kong. Originally a tech analyst and product manager, she pivoted to writing and illustrating in 2021 when her autoimmune diseases made it impossible to continue her corporate career.
Sophia is the artist behind The Hong Konger collection, which has been exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair, Soho House, Eaton Hong Kong, the Wild Lot, Oi Ling Antiques, Young Soy Gallery, and Art Next Expo.
Her book, The Hong Konger Anthology is available across bookstores in Hong Kong and sold out its first print run in three weeks, becoming Bookazine’s Book of the Week during the 2021 winter holiday season.
In August, Sophia exhibited The Hong Konger collection at The Affordable Art Fair with Young Soy Gallery, which sold out in four hours. She also unveiled 216 portraits of real Hong Kongers at the Fair’s The Hong Konger Wall mural and hosted a Make Your Own Hong Konger workshop for the Fair's opening night.
This October, Sophia will release her first children's mystery chapter book created during her K11 ARTUS artist residency, debut at the Digital Art Fair Asia in support of The Women's Foundation Hong Kong, and launch a new line of The Hong Konger products with the Lion Rock Press.
Sophia leverages her art and writing to advocate for and represent the intersectionality of gender and chronic illness, specifically at work. She also regularly answers anonymous questions about work, art, and chronic illness on her blog, which explores what it means to earn a living as a chronically ill entrepreneur. Sophia has autoimmune hepatitis, autoimmune cholangitis, celiac disease, ocular myasthenia gravis, osteoporosis, myalgic encephalomyelitis, and fibromyalgia.
